Colorado-based software firm Green Energy Corp has announced the launch of a new open source community, aimed at modernising national power systems and microgrids, while also driving the development of the Smart Grid. Discussing the announcement, Green Energy Corp Marketing VP Glenn Booth said that, "Green Energy Corp’s commitment to advance open source smart grid software will benefit utilities greatly," adding that, "Our upcoming GreenBus product incorporates best-in-class open source technologies built by expert software developers from around the world".
Dubbed "Total Grid", the community sponsored by Green Energy Corp currently consists of three projects: DNP3 (Distributed Network Protocol 3.0), Reef and a Thin Client GUI. Hosted on Google Code and released under an Apache 2.0 license, DNP3 is a Smart Grid protocol that allows for communication between field devices and control systems, such as SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), while Reef is the open source version of the company'sGreenBus platform. Additionally, Green Energy says that future projects may include developer’s tools, simulators, Modbus and IEC 61850 protocols, as well as MultiSpeak adaptors.
