Founded last April, Riptano, a company that provides training, advice and support for the NoSQL database Apache Cassandra, has been re-named as DataStax. Riptano wasfounded by Jonathan Ellis, chief of the Cassandra Project and Matt Pfeil. Both were previously employed by the cloud provider Rackspace, and Rackspace supplied the seed capital for Riptano.
In an open letter, CEO Pfeil says that when they founded the company the name was chosen using a random generator. As Riptano has become a success, adding two new offices and tripling its employees over the past six months, it was felt it was time for a new name that more closely represented the company's activities; DataStax is that name. Along with the re-naming, a series of new products is planned for the future, the first of which is OpsCenter – a management product for Cassandra.
